Melancholy and Mashed Potatoes

which comes first, circulation or the self?
or does the self precede circulation?
no need to quest;

a friend once told me:
whenever you feel sad,
imagine swimming in mashed potatoes.

there is cause, there is effect,
there is no causality, the force to connect.
tell me a secret,
I will mash it into the potatoes.

悲伤与土豆泥

先有流通后有自我,
还是先有自我再有流通?
不必追究;

一个朋友告诉我:
无论何时感到悲伤,
想象你在一大摊美味土豆泥里游泳

那里有因,有果,
唯独没有因果。
告诉我一个你的秘密,
让我把它捣入土豆泥中。

Checkmate - for chess duo & piano trio

FINAL CONCERT Music in the Barn

Duration: 10'
Program Note:

A structured Improvisation of a game of chess unfolds simultaneously at the chessboard in the front and the inside piano in the back, with the tension drawn from the front to the back—like the hidden puppeteer and the puppet in a puppet show, or the conscious and the subconscious—unfolding within the piano and reaching its peak. The tension flows not only between the two pairs of chess players but also between the duo in the front and the trio in the back, ultimately concluding through the third person—the pianist—by keyboard and pedal.

Composition: myself;

silo improvisation series

Improvisation: Shasha Chen | Chao Tian | Yeji Kim
Instruments: Haegeum, Sibao (four treasures), Percussions

Program Note:

I asked each residency musician to share a secret in their own language, freely choosing to pronounce only the vowels or consonants. In this way, the secrets became sounds, hidden within them. The recording was played alongside the improvisation during the radio concert, forming a continuous underlying layer.
