fluid identity: instrument ⇄ object

how to make a universe at home - for Tuba, Percussion and Objects (2017)

Duration: 9'32''
Program Note:
how to make a universe at home is a piece for the specific tubist (Michael Mansourati) and percussionist (Jess Tsang). It makes use of their own instrument collections and sound practices. I wrote the piece during the Montréal Contemporary Music Lab (MCML) which I was participating in, and it was premiered in August of 2017 at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal.
The piece unifies visual, sound, performers and music making in the context of creating an “event”. It demonstrates the fluidity of identities of instruments which are constantly transferred in parts and in whole between objects, installations, and sound generators, as a metaphorical expression for the identity struggle that I went through.
