Respiratory Mask Ensemble (2023)
Duration: 5'21''
Program Note: a micro-model of society
By building the installation and instructing the performance, I’m trying to make a micro-model of society represented by breathing through sealed respiratory masks, to discuss the relationship between individual identity and community: class, power dynamics, hierarchy, and other socio-political topics. And the relations/ interactions between the three people are:
when 1st and 2nd person breathe in and out/ making sounds alone:
their sound will be captured and amplified individually;
their lights will turn white synchronically and its speed represents the amount of breathe they give individually;
when 1st person is breathing/ making sounds, and 2nd person joins in/ interrupts:
1st person’s sound will be synthesized and this person’s light will turn green;
when 2nd person is breathing/ making sounds, and 1st person joins in/ interrupts:
2nd person’s sound will be distorted and this person’s light will turn red;
3rd person enters without making sound (not captured/ amplified):
this person only contributes breath into the green parent space (community!) at this moment,
but this person’s light is triggered and progressed by the length of constant breathing maintained by all three people;
- the 3rd person is the class that contributes least but benefits most from the society;
until later the 3rd person starts to give order and the other two start to follow him:
now the total spacial change of the installation will determine the degree of modulation for the other two people’s sound totality;
- here the 3rd person rises to the highest echelon of power;
until the oxygen inside of the installation (all community’s resource) is nearly exhausted:
the first two people exit/ die, and the 3rd person keep consuming the rest of the oxygen left;

我通过声音装置和表演,塑造了一个微观社会,来讨论个人身份和社群的关系:
第一个人和第二个人单独吹的时候,只会生产自己的声音,自己管道内白色的灯随声音触发及变化;
第二个人呼吸发声时第一个人干涉,则第二个人的声音的特效会被触发,同时ta的灯由白变绿;
第一个人呼吸发声时第二个人干涉,则第一个人的声音会被扭曲,同时ta的灯由白变红;
第三个人没有声音,所以一开始只能贡献呼吸;
三人共同的呼吸强度呈现在中间代表“集体/公共空间和资源”的绿色装置的收缩和扩张上,并触发电子音响处理的大数据参数变化,从而影响声音结果;
同时三人共同的呼吸长度还触发并推动了第三个人的灯光一级一级前进;
- 第三个人此时是贡献最少得到福利最多的阶层;
而后第三个人开始发出指令,另外两个人开始听从他指挥与他同步;
此时公共空间改变的程度决定了其它二人的声音被改变和扭曲的程度;
- 他就变成了权力阶层;
直到绿色装置内氧气逐渐被耗尽,前两个人退出/死去,剩下第三个人吸完最后的氧气;
